Latest Update on Wolgan Road Wolgan Gap

18 November 2022

In the last few days the Wolgan Valley Association and community have met with Lithgow City Council regarding the closure of our only access in and out of the valley – Wolgan Road at Wolgan Gap. Out of the last meeting, Council has acknowledged the adversity that our community is experiencing, and is committed to improving communications with the community and establishing an interim alternative access as a matter or urgency.

In the following weeks, staff from Council and the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program will be heading down into the valley (via a restricted NSW NPWS emergency fire trail) in the coming weeks to confidentially discuss with community members any issues, big and small, that they need assistance with.

Council has engaged Public Works Advisory to project manage the reinstatement of Wolgan Road at Wolgan Gap after the landslide and said they were dedicated to this effort, and in completing rectification works that are required after the previous landslips. It is envisaged that this will take approximately 12 months to complete.

Council has also advised that it will commence environmental assessments of the interim alternative access – the Donkey Steps – prior to commencement of works, a civil works contractor is being engaged as we speak and discussions will begin with the owners of land which the interim access would need to traverse.

The Association welcomes this news and is hopeful that these important early steps will lead to the reinstatement of access in and out of the valley, the reuniting of families and friends, and the return of business for which so many of us are reliant on.

For any enquiries on the access to Wolgan Valley and issues that may arise please contact Lithgow City Council by email  or directly by telephone on 02 6354 9999.
